Says smartphone web apps are unnecessary

BlackBerry boss attacks Apple

The chief executive of RIM, the vendor behind BlackBerry, has slammed its rival Apple at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Jim Balsillie told delegates that RIM’s forthcoming PlayBook tablet would be “three or four times” faster at web browsing than Apple’s iPad.

He also slammed the array of applications for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, saying that users “don’t need an app for the web”.

"We believe that you can bring the mobile to the web,” he said. “You don’t need to go through some kind of software development kit. That’s the core part of our message. You can use your existing development environment.

“There’s still a role for apps, but can you use your existing content? Can you use your existing web assets? Do you need a set of proprietary tools to bring existing assets on to a device, or can you use known tools that you use for creating websites?”

Earlier this year, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took his rival down a peg by pointing out that the iPhone had outsold BlackBerry, and that RIM would not catch up “in the foreseeable future”.

RIM responded by questioning the sales figures Apple had used for the comparison.
