US retailer plans an online movie portal with Sonic

Best Buy eyes movie downloads

Best Buy could be considering a partnership with Roxio CinemaNow creator Sonic Solutions to create a movie and television download and rental service.

According to Reuters, the US giant is planning to integrate software based on Sonic’s Roxio system in to a range of devices sold in its stores, including TVs, media players, PCs and mobile phones.

The retailer has signed a licensing agreement with Sonic to utilise its software and acquired digital music service Napster a year ago. It is hoped that the new platform will allow Best Buy to compete with online retailers such as Amazon and iTunes.

“Our relationship with Sonic Solutions allows Best Buy to quickly establish a strong position in the digital delivery of video entertainment,” commented Best Buy’s CEO Brian Dunn.
