BBC launches international iPlayer, sort of

The BBC is set to launch an international version of the firm’s video-on-demand iPlayer service via an Apple iPad app.

The service will see international customers pay a monthly subscription to access a range of present and past BBC programming including the ability to download content and watch it off line.

At least if said customer has an iPad and so long as your bit of BBC Worldwide happens to be 11 countries in Europe including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, The Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

For these countries the service will cost 6.99 euro per month or 49.99 euro annually.

"We have an exciting vision for what this service could become and will develop it based on feedback from within the markets," said BBC worldwide boss Jana Bennett.

The BBC said The BBC said the limited country iPad service is being viewed as a pilot for a broader global service.
