StoreDot has displayed a battery that can charge a smartphone in 30 seconds at Microsoft’s Think Next Conference.

In a demonstration, a Samsung galaxy S4 when from a dead battery to full power in 26 seconds.

The device is still a prototype and is roughly the size of a cigarette packet.

The battery is bio-organic and uses tiny self-assembling nano-crystals. StoreDot founder Dr Myersdorf told the BBC that the technology has a range of uses.

"Batteries are just one of the industries we can disrupt with this new material. It is new physics, new chemistry, a new approach to devices," he said.

The battery is expected to be commercially ready in three years.
