Quad core Opteron will be "generally available by mid-Q4" says AMD

Barcelona shortages to end soon

Reports have emerged that various AMD customers who ordered Barcelona chips when it launched are still awaiting their components.

According to tech news site The Inquirer, various vendors have said that they are not expecting to receive shipments of the chip before the end of the year, if not 2008.

It reported that a ‘bloke’ at Sun Microsystems told x-86watch.com that systems could arrive during December or January, but that: "We have our fingers crossed [for December]."

A sales representative from HP also stated that the company didn’t expect to receive any shipments this year either.

PC Retail spoke to AMD to find out whether or not these reports had any substance: "Our initial ramp of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors has been slower than anticipated but we believe that these products will be generally available by mid-Q4," said and AMD spokesperson.

"Systems based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors currently are however shipping from several of our partners. AMD expects the number of systems shipped based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors to increase towards the end of Q4 and into Q1 of next year."
