With its brand new range of Phenom processors on the horizon, chip manufacturer AMD is to reposition its existing Athlon 64 X2 model as an entry-level CPU for future PC users.

DailyTech reports that in conjunction with the strategic shift a number of changes will be made to the Athlon range. The new Athlon 64 X2 BE-2000 will be based on AMD’s 65nm Brisbane core, whilst the Athlon BE-2000 will boast a 45-watt TDP rating, making it as energy efficient as many single-core processors.

Other models in the range will include the BE-2400 and BE-2300.

The revitalised Athlon selection is expected to debut next month.
