Asustek has re-affirmed the importance of its branded laptop operation, indicating that it may move in the same direction as Acer by making an acquisition.

Asus' president for sales and marketing, Jonathon Tsang told Taiwan's Digitimes, that any move would probably follow the spinning off of its ODM division sometime next year.

It was also hinted by sources close to the publication that an acquisition was not only likely, but would also be positive for Asustek's 'Double Three' plan, which sees it aiming to become one of the top-five companies in the global laptop market within three years.

The plans also see it moving into the top-three laptop manufacturers within a further three years, a space currently occupied by Dell, HP and Acer.

Asus is currently the number one brand in Taiwan and in Russia however, it has been less successful in the major western markets.
