Ubisoft offers up its biggest, most varied world yet in a title which will shy away from hollywood's cliches of piracy

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag sets sail November 1st

Ubisoft’s newest instalment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise has finally cast off, despite a launch riddled with leaks.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will see players experience the true ‘golden age of piracy’ in what Ubisoft believes to be ‘the most varied world we’ve ever made in an AC game.’

Set to launch on November 1st on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, WiiU – and even next-gen offerings PS4 and possibly the Xbox 720 – Black Flag will not be the DLC or spin-off that many were expecting and will in fact be an entirely new story, complete with new characters and locations.

As hinted by its title, Black Flag will be a pirate game. But Ubisoft has said it will ‘shy away from clichés’ and offer a sea-plundering experience much different than that, which is often portrayed by Hollywood.

Staged in 1715, players step into the shoes of Edward Kenway – father of AC3’s Haytham – who is described as a ‘pirate trained by assassins’.

Navigating their way around the West Indies, players can look forward to an open world that offers seamless gameplay, much different to the linear story lines of previous entries in the franchise.

With eight different studios working on the title, Black Flag offers a world with over 50 unique locations in favour of different maps, which will see players experience natural progression through the game’s events.

Not limited to specific locations, players will be whisked between city landscapes, jungles and mayan ruins seamlessly – and for the first time in the franchise’s history, have the ability to dive underwater in order to discover hidden bounties and treasures.

Naval exploration and combat will play an increased role, as players take control of their own fully-customisable ship and sets the stage for intense naval combat as players leap aboard enemy vessels.

Whilst a much different experience to entries in the AC franchise, Ubisoft maintains that Black Flag will return to its roots and adopt previous elements, whilst offering new ones through greater exploration and freedom – one fitting for a pirate title.
