Apple received one million pre-orders for its Apple Watch smartwatch on the first day of pre-sales (Friday, April 10th).

About two thirds of US orders were for the $349 ‘budget’ Sports watch, which is made out of aluminum and comes with a plastic strap.

The stainless steal mid-range Apple Watch collection accounted for around one third of pre-orders, with prices starting at $549, according to analysis firm Slice Intelligence which projects consumer spending. This was based on receipts from 9,080 online shoppers.

The $10,000 Edition Watch didn’t show up on its findings due to a lack of pre-orders (probably because of the price tag, despite the VIP treatment).

The average selling price per device was apparently around $504, with orders averaging at 1.3 watches per person.

71 per cent opted for the larger 42mm casing, whereas 32 per cent of Sports buyers preferred the 32mm case.

The report also found that 72 per cent of people who ordered online bought an Apple product in the last two years, and 21 per cent pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus just a few months ago.

43 per cent of Apple fans who bought the new Macbook also forked out for the watch at the same time.

Apple decided not to sell the Apple Watch in its stores, instead favouring online sales at launch to tackle any potential stock shortages.

This meant there was no lengthy queues or customers camping outside of Apple stores - a change in strategy for the tech giant.
