Four major tech companies have been ordered to pay a total of $324 million after being accused of conspiring to hold down salaries.

According to Reuters, a source familiar with the deal revealed that Apple, Google, Intel and Adobe conspired to refrain from soliciting one another’s employees in order to avert a salary war.

A number of tech workers filed a class action lawsuit against the firms in 2011 and the high profile trial is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.

The case is largely based on an email exchange between Apple’s late co-founder Steve Jobs and Google’s former CEO Eric Schmidt where they discussed plans to avoid stealing each other’s best engineers.

The trial is set to being in May on behalf of roughly 64,000 workers.
