Former Nuance employees set to work on Siri updates

Apple creates ‘super team’ for iOS 7’s Siri enhancements

Apple has assembled a team of notable speech technology bods in Boston to further enhance Siri for iOS 7.

Sources have told Xconomy that the team includes a number of former VoiceSignal Technologies employees – the company that was purchased by Apple partner Nuance in 2007.

The team includes Larry Gillick, a former vice president of research at Nuance. Gillick’s Apple job is listed as ‘Chief Speech Scientist, Siri’.

This news has caused many to ponder if Apple is planning to move its Siri software completely in-house, moving away from relying on Nuance.

It wouldn’t be completely unnatural for Apple, who dumped Google Maps and made its own mobile mapping app last year.

In iOS 7, it is believed Siri will see speed enhancements and better pronunciation, as well as a set of new voices.
