The Advertising Standards Authority backs Apple following complaints from PC advocates

Apple cleared by ASA

Apple has been cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority regarding complaints it attracted for inferring PCs were more venerable to virus attacks than Macs.

The complaints were stirred up by an ad campaign run by Apple which painted a picture of PCs as virus riddled devices in contrast with seemingly invulnerable Macs.

Some of these complaints pointed out viruses attacked operating systems and software rather than hardware, while others claimed if PCs that ran Linux instead of Microsoft Windows they would also be less vulnerable, reported The Inquirer.

On this latter issue, Apple countered by citing a survey which claimed the desktop market for Linux users was very small, presumably extrapolating that the point was therefore mute. The firm then produced quotations from various journalists which claimed Windows based PCs often crashed while Macs rarely did.

Rejecting all of the complaints, the ASA concluded that ‘Apple had no case to answer’.
