It was 30 years ago today, when Steve Jobs brought the first Mac out to play.
On Tuesday January 24th 1984 at 9:45am, the Apple Macintosh 128K greeted Apple shareholders in its synthesised voice with the words: “Hello, I’m Macintosh.”
Weighing 16.5 pounds, the $2,495 beige box contained a nine-inch monochrome monitor and included a keyboard and mouse. Spurred by the ‘1984’ advert by movie director Ridley Scott, the very first Mac was so popular – selling 70,000 units by May 3rd of the same year– that within eight months its successor, the Macintosh 512K, was introduced.
In the three decades since, Apple’s flagship desktop system has seen numerous iterations, including an expansion into the portable MacBook range.
As a celebration of thirty years of the Mac, Apple has released a video featuring celebrity fans including musicians Moby and Hans Zimmer, which you can watch below.
Apple is also collecting the Mac memories of users worldwide, seeing which model was their introduction to the family of computers and what the majority of users used their Mac for each year – with an interesting transition from education and teaching taking priority in 1984 to an apparently negligible existence in 2013 as the internet and email took over.
