Anticipated Android OS updates have today arrived for handsets new and old.
Despite several false starts, Google has finally released the official version of Android 2.2 "Froyo" for over the air update to Nexus One aka "Google Phone" owners. The version being pushed is of build FRF85. There are also a number of online download links available to manually update the phone but these depend on what version of Android the Nexus One is currently running so for many it would be better to wait for the update notification on the handset to be safe.
The older HTC Hero, which was one of the first popular handsets to be offered by a range of operators a year ago, has finally received the Android 2.1 update - 5 months late. The situation with the HTC Hero caused considerable concerned with the Android platform, contributing to a number of versions of the operating systems and often leaving Hero owners out in the cold when it came to next applications that required Android 2.0+.
Unfortunately the update appears limited to unlocked HTC Heroes and not the G2 Touch version as sold through Orange and T-Mobile. It's not clear when those networks will finally deliver the update.
