AMD launch ‘world’s fastest’ Radeon HD 6990

Chipmaker AMD has launched the high end the Radeon HD 6990 graphics card which the firm claims is the fastest graphics card in the world.

Proclaiming victory with a world record 11,865 3DMark11 benchmark score, AMD said the new DirectX 11-capable Radeon HD 6990 was desinged for the power gamer, featuring "advanced image quality features for the best looking games".

Also offering native support for up to five displays via the AMD Eyefinity technology, the Radeon HD 6990 cards also feature a dual-BIOS toggle switch which allows gamers to unlock the card, increasing clock rates and voltages "for even more performance," AMD said.

"Packing more raw performance than any consumer graphics card ever created, the AMD Radeon HD 6990 provides the latest for the ultimate gaming advantage," said AMD GPU division boss Matt Skynner.

"This card is so powerful it can take on even the most demanding ultra-enthusiast tasks," he added.

AMD said the Radeon HD 6990 was immediately available from retailers with models starting at an eye-watering $699. UK retailers launched models such as the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6990 with 4GB of RAM, priced at around £575.
