Amazon has announced that it will extend its workforce in Europe, creating a centre in London to focus on film and TV delivery services.

The US company said London was ‘the obvious choice’ for a digital media development centre.

The eight-storey, 47,000 square foot office near Barbican tube station will house employees of LoveFilm and PushButton, two Amazon on-demand services that were both founded in the capital.

The centre, which is set to open up in the ‘TechCity’ in the coming months, may also recruit a selection of new staff members.

Having already dominated online retail, and making waves in the e-reader market with its Kindle range, Amazon is hoping to become a big player in video on demand services.

Amazon spokesperson Paula Byrne said: “Innovation is part of the Amazon DNA and we are creating a British centre of excellence to design and develop the next generation of TV and film services for a wide range of digital devices.”
