E-tailers Kindle platform may exceed the iPad

Amazon to sell more than 8 million Kindles this year

Amazon is likely to sell more than 8 million Kindle e-readers this year according to analysts cited in a Bloomberg report.

The astonishing number is at least 60 per cent greater than the sales volume for Amazon’s latest generation of Kindle than was previously expected. Last year the company sold less than 2.5 million Kindles, according to Bloomberg sources.

The company has not officially released any sales figures although in October the etailer said that the new Kindle 3 had sold more than all of the previous Kindle models. The firm has also been making significant inroads in pushing out the Kindle e-book store to non-Kindle devices via smartphone and desktop computer applications.

With the iPad selling some 7.5 million units from the April launch to September, there’s a very real possibility that the combined Kindle hardware and software reader installed base actually exceeds that of Apple’s tablet.
