Online retailer could create an iPhone rival, sources suggest

Amazon to create a smartphone?

E-tail giant Amazon could push even further into the consumer electronics sphere following the success of its Kindle e-reader, by creating its own branded smartphone, reports suggest.

Citing several insiders at the company, the New York Times claims that Amazon’s Lab 126 division, which is responsible for the Kindle, has discussed launching an Amazon phone to compete with iPhone and Android.

While the idea was dismissed as "out of Amazon’s reach" for the moment, the sources claim it has not been ruled out for the future.
