Offers unlimited music storage for $25 a year

Amazon boosts Cloud Drive storage

The world’s largest etailer Amazon has moved to boost the firm’s cloud music storage service Cloud Drive, adding an unlimited music storage option for US$20 a year.

In addition to the unlimited plan, Amazon announced that storage of MP3s bought from the Amazon MP3 store would not be subject to existing space limitations. The firm also unveiled an iPad version of the Cloud Player for the Apple iPad although it amounts to a tailored web page rather than the native Cloud player application for Android.

The $20 yearly service also boosts storage of non-music files to 20GB. That said the web-based mechanism for uploading non-music files is not particularly convenience versus dedicated cloud file providers such as Drop Box and Windows Live Mesh.

With the Amazon announcement coming directly after Apple’s 5GB iCloud free online storage offer, Amazon’s move may be the first of many in the sector as technology giants scrabble to attract customers for the new cloud services.

It remains to be seen if consumers are as keen as they are.
