The Barclays Employers Survey 2014 has revealed that 71 per cent of technology firms in the UK are planning to increase wages in the year ahead.

Despite rising living costs, 65 per cent of respondents from the tech sector said that wage pressure from employees wasn’t an issue, whereas 20 per cent said it was a concern to some extent, with 16 per cent saying it was a major concern.

Sam Kemp, corporate director, Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT) team, Barclays, said: “This is a very optimistic sentiment and a shift from the wage freeze environment of the last few years, which can only be a positive for employee morale.”

The employment of apprentices is also on the rise, with 34 per cent of technology businesses saying they took them on in 2013 and 40 per cent planning to take them on in 2014, more than any other sector.
