Internet traffic will increase nearly three-fold over the next five years, according to a new report from Cisco.
The increase will be due to more internet users and devices, as well as faster broadband speeds and more video viewing.
The forecast states that the annual IP traffic for 2018 will be greater than all IP traffic that has been generated globally from 1984 to 2013.
During the forecast period, the majority of traffic will originate from devices other than PCs for the first time in the history of the internet.
The 132 exabytes of traffic that is expected per month in 2018 is equivalent to:
- 8.8 billion screens streaming the FIFA World Cup final game in Ultra-HD/4K at the same time
- 5.5 billion people binge-watching "Game of Thrones" Season 4 via video-on-demand in HD or 1.5 billion watching in Ultra-HD/4K
- 4.5 trillion YouTube clips
- 940 quadrillion text messages
The Internet of Everything is also gaining momentum, said Cisco. By 2018 there will be nearly as many machine-to-machine (M2M) connections as there are people on earth.
