Microsoft to bring Windows as a service to smaller businesses

Microsoft has announced plans to open up Windows 10 Enterprise and make it more manageable and affordable for smaller buisnesses. 

The Redmond-based tech juggernaut announced two new versions of the Enterprise version of Windows 10. Windows 10 Enterprise E3 is a renaming of the existing Windows 10 Enterprise while the E5 version includes extras such as Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection. E3 is available now for $7 (around £5.30) per seat, per month while E5 is expected later this month at a higher cost. 

A post on the Microsoft website written by Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President – Windows and Devices Group "CSP partners will be able to provide a subscription to Windows 10 Enterprise Edition as part of a managed service offering, which is ideal for businesses who do not have dedicated IT resources or limited IT staff, and want their licensing and IT needs managed by a trusted and experienced partner."

The post also claims key features of the program to include increased security, simplified licenscing and deployment and partner-managed IT.

Elsewhere in Microsoft as a part of its Worldwide Partner Conference, the company will today announce that Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 will be generally available this fall along with announcing an expanded Surface Enterprise Initiative with new partnerships with IBM and Booz Allen Hamilton.

The partnership with IBM is particularly noteworthy, notes Murray Mitchell, global leader, Microsoft Services at IBM: “IBM will design Surface solutions that allow financial services and CPG employees to tap in to their company’s information on-the-go.

"We’ll apply experience of over 20 years as a Microsoft strategic partner to ensure the mobile apps blend with our client’s existing infrastructures creating dynamic, new mobile experiences uniquely suited to the needs of their employees.

"IBM is a recognized leader in enterprise computing, sitting at the center of a broad ecosystem of partners who, like Microsoft, aim to meet the needs of this market.”

Walton Smith, Booz Allen Vice President of Strategic Alliances and Solutions said: “Our goal is to deliver secure, end-to-end solutions to solve unique client challenges.

“Our partnership with Microsoft relationship will give our clients access to solutions built with the powerful and portable Surface devices and with the most secure and high-performing operating system available today, Windows 10.”
