Users will require an Nvidia GTX 970 graphics card

Recommended specs for the Oculus Rift revealed

The recommended specs for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset have been revealed.

According to the makers, users will need an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD 290 graphics card, an Intel i5-4590 processor and 8GB of RAM.

Users will also need two USB 3.0 ports, a compatible HDMI 1.3 video output and Windows 7 SP1 or newer.

In a blog post, Atman Binstock, chief architect at Oculus and technical director of Rift, said: “As a VR device, the Rift will be capable of delivering comfortable presence for nearly everyone. However, this requires the entire system working well.”

Binstock also revealed that development for OS X and Linux has been put on hold, while developers focus on delivering a ‘high quality’ VR experience to launch across hardware, software, and content on Windows.

The Oculus Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, and consumes 233 million pixels per second.

“In the future, successful consumer VR will likely drive changes in GPUs, OSs, drivers, 3D engines, and apps, ultimately enabling much more efficient low-latency VR performance," added Binstock.

“It’s an exciting time for VR graphics, and I’m looking forward to seeing this evolution."

This news comes after it was revealed that the Oculus will ship in Q1 2016.

The Rift also has an improved tracking system, which has been designed for seating and standing experiences.
