Major tech companies, including the likes of Google, Apple and Facebook, are making efforts to build a greener internet.
But, according a report from global orgainsation Greenpeace, power companies are causing a growth in demand for rapid energy, putting these efforts under threat.
The report revealed that resistance to renewable investments in states such as Virginia and North Carolina are causing a growth in demand for ‘dirty energy’.
Gary Cook, senior IT analyst for Greenpeace USA, said: “Tech companies are increasingly turning to the smart choice of renewable energy to power the internet, but they’re hitting a wall of stubborn monopoly power companies that refuse to switch to 21st century sources of energy.”
The report found that Apple has maintained its claim of a 100 per cent renewably powered cloud for another year, followed by Yahoo, Facebook and Google with 73 per cent, 49 per cent and 46 per cent clean energy respectively.
However, Amazon Web Services continues to expand in Virginia, with a continued lack of transparency about its energy use.
According to Greenpeace, Apple will lead the way with greener technologies, as the company previously announced plans to build and operate two new data centres, which will be powered by renewable energy.
Cook added: “Internet companies need to work together to push utilities and policymakers to provide them with 100 per cent renewable energy and avoid the creation of a dirty internet.”
