Online stores see ‘particularly strong sales’ in three months to September

In the three months to September 2018, the quantity bought in retail sales increased by 1.2% when compared with the previous three months, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) latest report.

The report showed that the sales boost was largely helped by strong sales in online retailing. Despite online sales as a proportion of all retailing falling slightly to 17.8% in September from the 18.0% in August 2018, food stores and clothing stores both reported record proportions of internet retail at 5.8% and 18.2% respectively.

Another driver came from “other stores” – meaning those stores in the ‘non-food’ sector that don’t fall under the ‘department’, ‘clothing’ or ‘household goods’ categories. Other stores saw an sales increase of 3.9% for the three months to September.

“Retail continued to grow in the three months to September with jewellery shops and online stores seeing particularly strong sales. This was despite a stark slowdown in food sales in September, following a bumper summer,” said ONS head of retail sales Rhian Murphy.
