Only 10 to 20 per cent of Intel-equipped tablets are Windows

Intel: 90% of our tablets are Android

Intel has revealed that up to 90 per cent of its tablet processors are for Android devices.

Discussing the firm’s Q1 earnings during a conference call, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said that out of the five million tablet processors shipped by Intel, only 10 to 20 per cent were for Windows.

Krzanich also added that the majority of tablets sold cost between $125 (£75) and $250 (£149).

The news comes as Intel pledges to invest more heavily in the tablet sector, predicting tablet shipments of 40 million during 2014.

Maurits Tichelman, GM of the worldwide reseller channel for Intel, said that a ‘significant change’ in Intel tablets would support the firm’s increased presence in the tablet market.

"We were late [to the tablet market] but a lot has changed [since then]," he said.

"We want to go after 40 million units this year. Of that 40 million, we expect a third to flow through the channel."

Christian Morales, VP and GM, EMEA, added that EMEA represented 43 per cent of Intel tablets sold in 2013, with the region previously responsible for around a third.

Intel CFO Stacy Smith said that one way in which Intel planned to boost sales was by increasing contra revenue – decreasing profits to increase sales numbers.

"As we ramp tablets [we] see the associated contra revenue dollars for tablets,” she said.

“We saw some of that in Q1 and we’ll see a bit more in Q2.”

The chip maker will also push further into the tablet market with several new products, including a quad-core version of the Intel SoFIA chip in 2015, which will be aimed at budget smartphones and tablet devices.

As part of the financials report, Intel announced revenue of $12.8 billion (£7.65 billion), operating income of $2.5 billion (£1.49 billion), net income of $1.9 billion (£1.13 billion) – down five per cent year-on-year – and EPS of 38 cents (23p), also down five per cent compared to 2012.

The company generated approximately $3.5 billion (£2.09 billion) in cash from operations, paid dividends of $1.1 billion (£0.66 billion), and used $545 million (£326 million) to repurchase 22 million shares of stock.

"In the first quarter we saw solid growth in the data center, signs of improvement in the PC business, and we shipped five million tablet processors, making strong progress on our goal of 40 million tablets for 2014," said Krzanich of the results.

"Additionally, we demonstrated our further commitment to grow in the enterprise with a strategic technology and business collaboration with Cloudera, we introduced our second-generation LTE platform with CAT6 and other advanced features, and we shipped our first Quark products for the Internet of Things."
