UK Government initiates a national strategy to reduce computer based carbon emissions

Government to launch green push

A new government initiative dubbed the ‘green IT strategy’ is currently being looked over by ministers ahead of its launch in eight weeks time.

The plan is designed to provide advice on how to reduce IT related power demands and emissions.

Part of the strategy will take its lead from existing plans set in place by hardware vendors, but will also suggest other ways in which carbon emissions can be reduced.

It will also lay out the extent to which the public sector is reducing its IT based emissions.

Government chief information officer John Suffolk said: "We can very significantly impact in terms of what is going on, but the key thing is to make progress. The problem is that people do not know what the best design for green IT is, and we have to reinvent it again and again."
