Google has announced a developer kit for its 3D-sensing tablet, Project Tango.
The seven-inch development kit is powered by the Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, and additionally includes 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a motion tracking camera, integrated depth sensing, Wi-Fi, BTLE, and 4G LTE.
The highlight of the kit is the 3D-sensing hardware and software, which can map out environments in 3D space on the tablet, as well as tracking motion.
The sensors allow the device to make over a 250,000 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space surrounding the user.
The Project Tango kit will be initially available in ‘limited quantities’ for developers – a form of release similar to the original launch of Google Glass. The kits will cost $1,024 (£609).
“These development kits are designed for professional developers interested in exploring the future of mobile 3D sensing,” said Google on the sign-up page for the kit.
“Developers will receive updates as the software algorithms and APIs evolve. These development kits are not a consumer device and will be available in limited quantities.”
Project Tango was previously teased as a prototype platform by Google earlier this year, with the 3D-sensing software originally integrated into a smartphone form factor.
