Fitbit Flex 2 explodes on user

Fitbit is investigating an incident where one of its products reportedly exploded on the wrist of a customer.

According to ABC News, Wisconsin resident Dina Mitchell was reading a book when the Fitbit Flex 2 on her wrist exploded, causing second degree burns. After tearing the still on-fire device off her arm, doctors had to remove melted plastic and rubber from the wound. Mitchell says she had been wearing the fitness tracker for about two weeks prior to the incident.

While there haven’t bee any other reported incidents, Fitbit says it is looking into the problem and issued a statement saying:

"We are extremely concerned about Ms. Mitchell’s report regarding her Flex 2 and take it very seriously, as the health and safety of our customers is our top priority. Fitbit products are designed and produced in accordance with strict standards and undergo extensive internal and external testing to ensure the safety of our users.

We have spoken with Ms. Mitchell and are actively investigating this issue. We are not aware of any other complaints of this nature and see no reason for people to stop wearing their Flex 2. We will share additional information as we are able."

This seems to be an isolated incident for now, but users may want to err on the side of caution until the company completes its investigation into what exactly caused the device to blow up.
