‘The cloud is the most innovative and secure place to keep your data’

With Gartner revealing that the cloud market has grown by an average of 32 per cent in 2015, we caught up with Alert Logic’s chief security evangelist Stephen Coty to discuss cloud security.

Coty points to the continuing lower cost, innovation in technology and the growth of the security tools available as the main drivers behind businesses moving their workloads to the cloud.

“With technology refreshes, companies are starting to compare the cost of hardware and data centre space to cost of migration to the cloud. There are several third parties that can come in to assist in assessing the existing environment and proposing various plans to move it to the private, hybrid or public clouds,” Coty told PCR.

With regards to security, he detailed SQL Injection and CSS as the top attack vectors in the cloud, warning that as the footprint and enterprise presence increases, those threats will also increase. “That is why it is important to have the right security strategy for the cloud,” Coty explained. “Treat the cloud like you would your enterprise.”

Despite this, Coty is adamant that the cloud is the future of computing and ‘is the most innovative and secure place to place your data today’.

When asked what the next big thing in the evolution of the cloud will be, Coty envisioned: “Cloud services split between multiple cloud providers for redundancy and efficiently deliver content to customers.”
