Renaming follows acquisition of security brand in 2010

CES 2014: McAfee software rebranded as Intel Security – John McAfee ‘elated’

The McAfee name is to be phased out and rebranded as Intel Security, Intel’s CEO has said.

Brian Krzanich said that the rebranding had already begun, but could take up to a year to finalise “as new products are introduced”.

Intel Security, which will include all of the security products and services offered by the firm, will retain the red shield logo used by McAfee products, which Krzanich said symbolises “the core values of security and protection”.

Intel announced its plans to acquire the McAfee brand in 2010, with a bid of $7.7 billion (£4.7 billion).

John McAfee, the firm’s founder, became somewhat notorious in the tech industry for his various antics, which have been speculated as a catalyst for the rebranding.

Asked by the BBC how he felt about the removal of his name from the software, McAfee said that he was "elated".

"I am now everlastingly grateful to Intel for freeing me from this terrible association with the worst software on the planet," he said.

"These are not my words, but the words of millions of irate users."
