Not so great if you’re heading in from Melbourne

Apple fixes Australian maps… sort of

Apple has partially fixed its maps of central Australia after the Australian authorities warned people not to use its mapping service.

According to Mashable, the maps now show the correct location for the town of Mildura. However, it’s only correct if you’re approaching from the south, visitors travelling from Melbourne will still end up in the middle of Murray Sunset National Park.

The local police advised people not to use iOS maps after a number of users ended up stranded for up to 24 hours in desert heat without food or water.

“Once you get about 10 to 15 kilometers in, there is no phone coverage at all … If someone got stuck out there on a 46-degree day, then they’re in real trouble out there. That’s pretty nasty country out there. There’s not much shade and a lot of hot sand and no water at all,” said Mildura police spokesman Simon Clemence.
