The iPhone has been unveiled at Macworld 2007, combining a touch screen iPod with a communications device.

Apple enters the phone market

The most remarkable thing about the iPhone appears to be its entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs was typically effusive. “iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone,” he said. “We are all born with the ultimate pointing device, our fingers, and iPhone uses them to create the most revolutionary user interface since the mouse.”

While it’s not clear what, other than our fingers, Jobs thinks we currently use to navigate around our mobile devices, there’s no doubting that it’s a brave move for Apple to leave behind its much heralded Click Wheel interface.

The phone is also essentially an Apple PDA, running its OS X operating system. It can sync contacts from PCs or Macs and allows one touch dialling of them. It has a two megapixel camera, GSM and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The iPhone will be available in the in June 2007, Europe in late 2007, and Asia in 2008. Currently only US pricing has been given, with a 4GB model costing $499 and an 8GB model $599. It will run exclusively on the Cingular network in the US.
