Apple App Store hits 40bn downloads, with almost half made in 2012

Apple has announced that its App Store has surpassed the 40 billion download mark, with two billion being downloaded in December 2012 alone.

Launching four years ago in July 2008, Apple’s App Store has more than 500 million active accounts and offers up over 775,000 apps available for iPhone, iPad and iPod.

Apple has revealed that almost half of the 40bn downloads were made in 2012, and developers have collectively been paid more than $7bn dollars by the company.

"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

"Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."
