The founder of antivirus software giant McAfee is said to be the prime suspect in the murder of his neighbour.
On Saturday night, American expatriate Gregory Faull was gunned down in his home in San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye, an island off the coast of Belize.
Gizmodo reports that the two men had a long-running feud, with Faull recently filing a formal complaint after McAfee had allegedly been firing guns.
On Monday, Wired posted an exclusive interview with McAfee in which he insisted he was innocent. He described how he hid from the Belizean police by buying himself in the sand with a cardboard box over his head to breathe.
The 67 year-old is convinced that he will be killed if found. With regards to the murder, he believes that whoever shot Faull may have actually been intending to shoot McAfee. “I thought maybe they were coming for me. They mistook him for me. They got the wrong house. He’s dead. They killed him. It spooked me out,” he told Wired.
According to the police, Faull was found face up in a pool of blood with a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Marco Vidal, head of Belize’s Gang Suppression Unit, says that McAfee is a prime suspect in Faull’s death.
Currently on the run somewhere in the Central American nation, McAfee told Wired that “Under no circumstances am I going to willingly talk to the police in this country. You can say I’m paranoid about it but they will kill me, there is no question. They’ve been trying to get me for months. They want to silence me.”
It has been reported that McAfee was an amateur pharmacologist and has attempted to purify MDPV, also known as ‘bath salts’. There is speculation that his intensive use of drugs has led to his growing paranoia. MDPV was recently banned in the US but remains legal in Belize.
