Advanced Micro Devices has unveiled its new Z-60 chip, which is the firm’s answer to rival Intel’s tablet chip.
The Z-60 is being marketed for use within the "performance tablet" market and packs a considerable punch.
Equipped with two cores rated at 1GHz, a GPU unit clocked at 257MHz and 80 Radeon graphics cores, the chip is designed to offer high graphics performance.
The firm has stated its new chip is suitable for devices as thin as 10mm and will be compatible with "legacy" Windows applications, meaning the chip will be capable of running Windows 7 applications, whilst offerings from rivals Nvidia and Qualcomm will not.
A statement released by AMD has confirmed the new chip will begin to feature within devices globally this year, with a launch "in conjunction with the availability of Windows 8."
AMD faces stiff competition from rival chip maker Intel, whose Clover Trail Z2760 chip is to be used within a range of the latest Windows 8 based tablets and other systems from the likes of HP, Dell and Lenovo.
