Amazon has announced its intentions to raise its UK workforce to over 24,000 in 2017. This would be an addition of 5,000 new staff.
The majority of these new staff are expected to work at the firm’s warehouse ‘fulfillment centres’ around the country, but there was no breakdown provided. "We haven’t split out specifically technical roles from the 5,000 jobs we plan to recruit in 2017," a spokesperson said to The Register. "What we can say is that more than 1,500 roles will be based at our UK Development Centres (Edinburgh, Cambridge, London) and in AWS by the end of 2017 (it’s currently around 1,000 as of Dec 2016). These employees will be working on global customer innovations like Alexa, Prime Air, Prime Video, cloud computing and more."
The Register also reports that three new "fulfillment centres" are to be opened in Tilbury, Doncaster and Daventry. There will also be approximately 1,500 software developers, engineers technicians, and apprentices hired, but there’s no indication whether they will work for AWS in the company’s new Shoreditch head office, or if they will be based in develepment centres for products such as Alexa, Kindle and drone deliveries.
This news comes a couple of weeks after Apple CEO Tim Cook reaffirmed his company’s faith in the UK after Brexit, and should be a further vote of confidence in the country’s digital future.
