Ultra-large 4K/UHD displays sales almost double year-on-year

Revenues from large-format displays (LFDs) in Western Europe continued to grow during the early part (weeks 40–46) of Q4 2018. The increase of over +11% year-on-year was driven mainly by sales of ultra-large 4K/UHD displays, according to the latest distribution data published by CONTEXT.

LFDs with screens of 65-inches and above generated over 66% of revenues in the first seven weeks of Q4 2018, which is 30% more than a year ago.

Sales of 4K/UHD screens in this size category almost doubled year-on-year, and accounted for over 77% of sales, “confirming a continuous shift from full HD (FHD) to higher resolutions,” says CONTEXT, which pointed out that despite this, FHD remains the dominant resolution for smaller displays.

The growth in sales comes from non-touch signage and follows a weak third quarter for interactive LFDs. In spite of increased interest in such products, sales of some premium collaborative displays declined in the first part of Q4, reducing overall growth.

Another spur to sales has been the continuing fall in price of 4K/UHD displays: for instance, in early Q4 2017, distributors’ average price for top-selling 65-inch displays was over €1,660 but by early Q4 2018 it was just €1,350, almost 20% less.

“It is not only lower prices that are increasing customer interest in these large displays but also enhanced design and additional functionality to, for example, ensure displays are business-ready or enhance data security”, said Dominika Koncewicz, Senior Analyst for Displays at CONTEXT.

“Distributors have also noted increased sales of models with screen treatments such as anti-glare coatings or protective covers, which allow the displays to be used in outdoor environments.”
