During the Californian company’s Computex keynote, AMD once again push the boundaries on its CPU technology with the new second-generation Threadripper.
We had already known for awhile that the chip would land Later this year,But AMD has confirmed that it will launchIn the third quarter of 2018.
The new Threadripper will feature up to 32-cores and 64 threads. It will also run on MDs 12 nm Zen+ architecture, much like the latest Ryzen desktop CPUs.
As you’d expect, the new Threadripper will also give you plenty of performance upgrades such as higher clock speeds more efficient performance and improve boost. It is also a significant upgrade from the 16-core CPU that was launched last year.
"When we were bringing out 16-core, we already had on the drawing board the 32-core," AMD’s Jim Anderson said in an interview. "That’s one of the reason it can drop into the same TR4 socket, is because up front we had that in mind."
The announcement comes one day after Intel announced its 28-core CPU, which will give both vendors an even greater grip on the high-end desktop market.
The last year has seen AMD recapture a lot of the market thanks to the launch of the Ryzen product line alongside the first-gen Threadripper. So successful was AMD’s year that the chipmaker was given the prestigious PCR Company of the Year award at the PCR Awards 2018.
"I think Ryzen has had a big impact on the industry, but the best thing about is is that it’s driven innovation and competition back in the industry," Anderson continued. "And that’s good for everybody, and it’s especially good for end users. I think having Intel react to us just benefits end users. I also think it’s nice to see AMD back to its heritage of pushing the industry."
