Hot off the heels of the launch of the universally acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey last week, Nintendohas made the bold statement that it plans for its Switch console to shift more units in its first year than the Wii U did in its entire lifetime.
The Japanese game icon stated that it sold 2.93 million Switch consoles over the last quarter, bringing total sales up to just under eight million since its launch in March. Following on from the strong quarter, Nintendo has upped the amount of systems it aims to sell within the first year from 10 million to 14 million – the Switch’s predecessor, the Wii U, only sold 13.56 million consoles in its five year lifetime. The company has also increased its forecast for the full year from $6.59 billion to $8.44 billion.
In terms of this quarter alone, Nintendo made $209 million in profit, with total revenues hitting $1.93 billion. Over the last six months, Nintendo sold 22 million games – and that doesn’t account for the aforementioned Mario title.
While the console is over six months old at this point it is still difficult to actually find a Switch in stores. This is an issue that Nintendo is well aware of and one that it hopes to rectify.
“We’ve boosted Switch production in order to meet strong demand from our customers as it was difficult for customers to buy the consoles at retail stores,” Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said at an earnings briefing on Monday.
The Switch’s sales power is likely to be challenged in the coming weeks with the launch of the high-powered Xbox One X on November 7th. “The true power of the Switch would be tested during the upcoming holiday season," Kimishima continued.
