AMD RX Vega release slips into July

After much speculation as to how AMD would follow on from the momentum of Ryzen, the company last week announced the impressively specced Radeon Vega Frontier Edition. Somewhat disappointingly, the gaming-oriented RX Vega didn’t make an appearance at the launch event. Now, according to Kitguru, the reason for that is that the new card won’t be launching until after the Frontier Edition is released.

Speaking at the 45th annual J.P Morgan GlobalTechnology, Media and Telecom Conference, AMD’s CEO Lisa Su explained that the company would be ‘launching Vega across all of the market segments over the next couple of months’.

“We’re very excited about Vega. Vega is a brand new architecture and actually has really the world’s most advanced memory architecture for GPUs. What we did announce at our analyst day was that the first shipping Vega will be the Frontier Edition which will ship with 16GB of memory and will ship towards the latter half of June. You will see the enthusiast gaming platform, the machine learning platform, the professional graphics platform very soon thereafter. And so we will be launching Vega across all of the market segments over the next couple of months.”

The Frontier Edition of Vega sports 64 compute units, 12.5 teraflops of single precision processing power, 16GB bandwidth cache and 8K display support. It comes in two variants – with and without liquid cooling – and the company has touted it as “the most powerful graphics card in the world for AI and applications”. 

AMD is keeping pretty quiet with launch details right now, but we should hear more soon, potentially as early as Computex next week.
