Vine to be rebranded as Vine Camera

After months of speculation as to what is going on with Vine, Twitter has announced that it will rebrand and relaunch the app as Vine Camera on January 17th.

The functionality of the app will largely be the same as users record and make six-second videos, but the wider Vine network will be gone. Instead, users will have to settle for posting their creations on Twitter instead. 

The company explained what will be involved with the transition to Vine Camera: “On January 17th the Vine app will become the Vine Camera. We will notify you through the app before this happens. The Vine Camera will allow you to make six second looping videos and post them to Twitter, or save them to your camera roll in a logged out state. 

“You will not be able to do any of the other things you can currently do with the Vine app. Once the Vine Camera is live, you will no longer be able to download your Vines from the app.

“When we update the Vine app to be the Vine Camera in January, videos that are under six seconds will loop – whether you post them from the Vine Camera or upload them directly to Twitter.”

Vine’s website will archive previous videos and users can save their content before the January 17th deadline. 

This news comes after Twitter stated its plans to shut down Vine last year. Twitter acquired Vine in October 2012, but after failing to secure a buyer announced that the social media app would be no more.
