After the unmitigated disaster of the Galaxy Note 7, you might think that Samsung would quietly retire the ‘Note’ moniker in favour of something a bit less toxic (or flammable). But apparently according to a source close to the South Korean tech giant the Galaxy Note 8 isn’t dead, and in fact it could be a huge upgrade when it arrives.
Speaking to BusinessKorea, an official from one of Samsung’s partner companies said: “Samsung will introduce 2K resolution displays in the Galaxy S8, but it will use 4K resolution displays in the Galaxy Note 8 to realize improved virtual reality functions.
"I heard that it will connect with new Gear VR wearable.”
The focus on a massively increased resolution might seem excessive on a screen that is so small but the jump from QHD to 4K could see a huge difference when it comes to virtual reality (VR) use. If the new phablet is tied in with the launch of an updated Gear VR headset, we could be seeing a mobile VR experience that blows all other smartphone competitors away.
While the 4K screen resolution seems to be the biggest talking point of the Galaxy Note 8, the source adds that improved stylus features and a more secure iris scanner will also be included, along with a new AI assistant that’s said to be making its debut on the Samsung Galaxy S8.
As is the case with all of these rumours, they are just that and should be taken with a fair few grains of salt. The probability of a drastically improved Galaxy Note 8 would make sense for the company as it looks to erase the damage done by the Galaxy Note 7.
Of course, as mentioned before, Samsung could kill off the ‘Note’ branding altogether in favour of something with a bit less heat around it, but the specific nature of the leak shows that the company still values the Note name.
It’s not expected that Samsung will launch the phone any earlier than usual, and should come in the second half of 2017
