New MacBook Pro images leaked

Apple is hosting an event tomorrow where it is expected to reveal a redesigned MacBook Pro, but images hidden inside yesterday’s MacOS Sierra update have inadvertantly spilled the beans on the device’s biggest new features: a touch panel above its keyboard and a fingerprint reader.

The images, spotted by MacRumors, show a familiar looking MacBook Pro with slimmer bezels around the keys and screen. It also seems that the slimline keyboard introduced in last year’s MacBook wasn’t just a compressed version for the smaller form factor and will be included in the new Pro.

Of course, the big change is the long-expected (presumably OLED) touch strip at the top of the keyboard. The images show that it will be able to display colours, buttons and symbols in response to what’s on screen.

One of the images also shows it being used for Apple Pay, with an arrow pointing to the right corner where a Touch ID fingerprint reader is located. 9to5Mac also found icons inside MacOS that look similar to those found in iOS that back up this suggestion.

It is likely that Apple, in keeping with its other products, will call this touch strip the Magic Toolbar. A trademark filing found by The Trademark Ninja shows that Apple has coined the phrase. It would be a surprise at this point if it didn’t have ‘magic’ in the name somewhere.
