MCV, Develop and eSports Pro: New editors, new events, and new sites for NewBay’s expanding video games division

Newbay’s video games division has four new senior editorial staff working across the market leading MCV and Develop titles, as the firm expands its presence in the events space and moves into new territory with the imminent launch of eSports Pro.

MCV will be headed up by Seth Barton, a veteran journalist and editor, most recently in charge of Expert Reviews at Dennis Publishing – there he was responsible for explosive traffic growth and content remit expansion, and he also writes video game articles for Stuff, Wired, The Metro, PC Pro and Eurogamer.

"I’m thrilled to be joining the excellent team at MCV at an exciting time for the industry. Virtual reality is here, the traditional console cycle is being disrupted, the lines between mobile and TV gaming are blurring, eSports are on the rise, digital and physical sales fight for consumer attention, while the shadow of Brexit looms large. Whether it’s in print, digital download or online, we’ll strive to make MCV an essential source of information for everyone who sells, publishes or develops games in the UK, as well as acting as a forum for constructive discussion across the industry."

Alex Calvin has been promoted to MCV Deputy Editor, having worked for two years on the brand supporting the editor and contributing to it’s growth this year.

Meanwhile on Develop, Jem Alexander joins Newbay as Editor. Joining Newbay from Riot Games, Jem has previously been content editor at PlayStation and Joystiq.

“I’m thrilled to be taking the helm at Develop. It’s an opportunity to take a franchise with a rich, respected history in the industry and, alongside a new editorial team, continue its evolution to best reflect the constantly changing world of game development. I’m looking forward to being able to delve deeply into the super-technical nitty gritty of games and picking the brains of some of my favourite developers."

Alexander will be working alongside the newly appointed Sean Cleaver as deputy editor. The entire staff will be operating from Newbay Europe’s new London Bridge offices.

Elsewhere in Newbay’s games division, eSports Pro – a brand new title for the eSports industry – will launch in November. This entirely new website will deliver news, analysis, interviews and all the info the burgeoning eSports industry could need. A further announcement on that will follow.

Also in November Newbay is launching the eSports Industry Awards, and the Future Games Summit.
