This year’s conference and expo took place at the Emirates Stadium yesterday (May 18th), featuring a number of informative talks, an in-depth distie panel session, various interactive masterclasses, and a busy expo.

The day saw conference talks ranging from the how to cash in on the connected home market and the major opportunities around broadband, to what the biggest technology trends will be this year.

Context’s Jonathan Wagstaff informed attendees that Germany leads in motivation and consumer understanding when it comes to the smart home, and UK retailers should learn from them.

Virgin Media Business’ Andrew Wilson revealed that 94 per cent of SMBs consider a reliable internet connection critical to the success of their business, explaining that if retailers and resellers offer up better infrastructure, they are likely to see those customers investing in more technology.

GfK’s Carl West detailed how super-sized monitors, NAS and gaming will impact the channel in 2016.

"Super-sized mointors are in demand and an area you will want to focus on. You’ve got to show these products off. It’s not enough to just give customers a brochure," advised West.

There was also a panel session during the conference, where the audience got to ask execs whatever they liked. Subjects touched on during the panel session included whether Amazon is really a threat, why retailers need to get on board with VR, and whether disties are looking to do more online transactions.

Also at this year’s show, for the first time ever, we had four masterclass sessions. Each session was run by an expert in their field. And delegates were able to ask them questions, share experiences and walk away with expert advice.

The sessions included ‘Successfully Navigating Online Sales’ from More From Group’s Brian Trevaskiss, ‘Empowering Your Workforce: Staff Retention And Talent Acquisition’ from Utopia’s Craig Hume, ‘Reinvigorate Your Store’ from Gekko’s Dan Todaro, and ‘Marketing Tools & The New Social Media’ from IT business consultant Richard Tubb.

There was also an extensive expo featuring the latest products and services from the likes of DMSL and Virgin Media Business, BullGuard, Spire Technology, Network Group, VIP Computers, Terra Computer, QSAN, Hannspree, M2M Direct, NightWatcher, Fortune Technology, Philips MMD, AOC, ESET, CompTIA, TrustATec, Brigantia and Caseking.
