Blackphone 2: The new privacy-focused smartphone

Users will now be able to control their own data and privacy thanks to security company Silent Circle, which has updated its smartphone.

Dubbed the Blackphone 2, the smartphone adds software to the Android operating system (OS) so users can alternate what each app, service or site can know about them.

Designed for businesses that are keen to avoid information sharing by employees, the new device doesn’t come cheap – it has a £525 price tag.

David Puron, head of engineering at Silent Circle, said: "At the moment it’s often about accepting everything or denying all the app permission requests. We wanted it to be more fine-grained than that," reports the BBC.

Plus, the Blackphone allows users to create separate virtual ‘spaces’, where they can set up different permissions for apps, depending on if the phone is being used for work or for personal use.

The Blackphone 2 will also be a part of Google’s Android for Work program, which aims to offer businesses simple management and enhanced security for devices.

"Privacy is about being able to decide and control what information to share and how you share it," added Bill Conner, president and CEO of Silent Circle.

"We’re delighted to join the Android for Work program. It’s a significant step forward in Silent Circle’s development which enables us to deliver privacy and security to a broader enterprise customer base, while meeting their need for the wide-ranging apps and services provided by Google."

This development is certainly an improvement to help protect devices, as more and more firms report that they have experienced some kind of hack.

For example, Apple recently suffered from an attack on its App Store, and many users were left vulnerable to stolen data.

By offering a smartphone that can protect users from data being taken, it will no doubt help to provide peace of mind to many who are afraid of hackers.

We may even start to see smartphone brands such as Samsung or Apple jump on board, and offer this type of service to customers in the future.
