Unexpected announcements from the electronics and entertainment giant

Sony startles E3 with Kickstarter-funded Shenmue 3, plus Final Fantasy VII remake and The Last Guardian

Sony used its E3 press conference to reveal that a Shenmue 3 game is in development.

That fact was surprising in itself, but series creator Yu Suzuki went on to say that he was launching a Kickstarter to fund the title.

And it seems that he’ll have no problem reaching the goal of $2m, with fundraising sitting just shy of that target after a veritable pile in after the announcement.

But that wasn’t the only surprise Sony had in store – the electronics and entertainment giant also confirmed that:

  • A full blown remake of Final Fantasy VII called, imaginatively, Final Fantasy VII Remake, is in the works.
  • The Last Guardian is still in development and is coming to PlayStation 4 at a TBC date in 2016.
  • A new game in the Hitman franchise, called simply Hitman, is in development for PS4, but also other platforms including PC.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be promoted heavily with PS4 as opposed to the brand’s historic tie-ins with Xbox, with owners of the Sony machine getting extra DLC content upon the game’s release.

We’ll be rounding up all the PC-related news from the big E3 press conferences here on PCR throughout the week!
