HTC’s current CEO, Peter Chou, has been replaced by Chairwoman Cher Wang.
"As an entrepreneur at heart, I am excited to see so many new opportunities, and I am honoured to accept this opportunity to help shape the next stage of HTC’s development," said Wang in a statement.
"In his time as CEO, Peter Chou oversaw the successful transition of HTC from a handheld device manufacture for other brands to a global branded company. In his new executive role as head of the HTC Future Development Lab, Mr Chou will be instrumental in identifying future growth opportunities for the Company."
Chou will be free to work on new devices, such as the HTC Vive virtual reality headset.
Speaking of VR, HTC’s connected products marketing boss, Jeff Gattis, told PCR’s sister publication MCV that the firm will deliver a VR consumer product to stores this year.
“We see VR as a once in a generation technology. It’s not just about changing the way people play games, but how people interact with computers,” said Gattis.
“Gaming is the obvious pushing off point because there’s pent-up demand there, but we’ve really looked at it from a broader point of view. We’ve announced partnerships with HBO, Lionsgate and Google – we’re looking at entertainment, education and training experiences.
“We’re planning a virtual reality road show. We want to be at popular events, developer conferences and universities, letting people experience this,” added Gattis.
“We’re going to make a big push to get this in front of people and let them experience it and get excited about it. That’s also going to help broaden the overall adoption.”
