Reports suggest service could be subscription-based

Microsoft trademarks Windows 365 name

Microsoft has filed for a trademark for Windows 365, suggesting the company may introduce some kind of new subscription-based service.

Rumours have since surfaced suggesting the company may charge an annual fee for the OS rather than a one-time fee.

The name Windows 365 is similar to Microsoft’s subscription-based Office 365 cloud product line-up.

However, following the announcement of Windows 10, it looks like Microsoft may not be targeting a subscription service just yet, according to Neowin.

Although users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for the first year, Microsoft has not detailed its pricing strategy for the OS once the year ends.

With Microsoft having trademarked the Windows 365 name, this means another company cannot take it. It’s not currently clear whether the name will actually be used in the near future or not.

This news comes after Microsoft unveiled its HoloLens wearable tech and HoloStudio 3D print software.
